Membership is available to:

  • Anyone interested in credit reform and debt from a consumer perspective, and whose work is free from conflict.

  • Casework Financial Counsellors

  • Trainee financial counsellors, organisations and individuals who would like to keep abreast of news and information in the Financial Counselling and Credit Reform sector.

There are two classes of Membership

1.      Member of SAFCA - a Professional Financial Counsellor, is working as a Financial Counsellor (either voluntary or paid); is qualified with the Diploma in Community Services (Financial Counselling); has undertaken an accreditation-supervision process and participates in regular professional development.

2.      Associate of SAFCA - is a student of the Diploma; is working as a Financial Counsellor (either voluntary or paid) or is working in the sector in an equivalent capacity. Associate Membership is also available to an organisation or individual who would like to keep abreast of news in the Financial Counselling and  Credit and Debt Reform Sector. You will have access to some news and information, the Resource Directory and discounts at professional development days. For example you may be a Social Worker, a Micro Credit Worker, a Gambling Counsellor, a Mental Health worker, or anyone needing to refer clients to a Financial Counsellor, or seek advice from the State Resource Worker regarding clients.

Some Advantages of membership to SAFCA:
  • The Financial Hardship units of some organisations and businesses (DentalSA for example), will accept waiver letters that have been signed-off by a SAFCA Professional Member only. This gives these organisations an understanding of the client’s real need and that they are seeking appropriate help for their situation.

  • The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) recognises the State Financial Counselling Associations as ensuring best minimum practices in our sector. This helps ensure that consumers and the community receive fair and equitable service free from conflict of interest.

  • Attendance at regular general meetings and free or subsidized attendance at professional development seminars, workshops and the SAFCA conference

  • A network for information exchange and casework issues and discussion

  • Associate membership of the Australian Financial Counselling and Credit Reform Association Inc. (AFCCRA).
